Description
Large pillar-shaped cactus with a height of approximately 9 m. The diameter of the base is approximately 60 cm, but it may exceed 1 m. The number of crests is generally 11-15 (rarely 17), and the back has a groove. Approximately 20 thorns grow from one place and may reach more than 10 cm in length, but there are few surrounding the flowers. The flowers bloom during the afternoon. Its natural habitat is regions with annual precipitation of 50–550 mm and lowest temperature in winter of 1–13°C.
The indigenous Seri people used this species for food, fence material, ceremonies, etc. It was listed as Least Concern in the 2013 Red List of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
