Development of sustainable wheat production system in dry and heat prone agro-ecologies in Sudan and Sub-Saharan Africa

2 zero hunger 1 no poverty 13 climate action

We are working to develop high temperature and drought-tolerant wheat varieties. First, to expand the genetic diversity of wheat, we have created a wheat diversity population that encompasses the intraspecific diversity of related wild species of wheat. This was grown in the field at the Sudan Agricultural Research Organization and lines that are tolerant to high temperature and drought were selected. These lines were grown in an artificial climate chamber at the Arid Land Research Center, Tottori University, to study their properties in detail. We are now conducting research to elucidate the genetic information and molecular biological mechanisms involved in the high-temperature and drought tolerance of these lines. This research will help to produce the wheat needed in sub-Saharan Africa, where wheat will be scarce due to future global warming.
