Climate risk management toward sustainable agriculture in dryland Africa

13 climate action 2 zero hunger 15 life on land

Drought is the natural disaster with the most victims in the world. Climate risk management as a way to enhance resilience against drought disasters, especially in rural communities, is being introduced in many parts of the world. We aim to develop farmland monitoring and crop modelling techniques for dryland agriculture, and to develop a farmer decision-making system based on seasonal forecasts.

The world's drylands are facing land degradation, including biodiversity loss. In arid grasslands, it is important to determine appropriate livestock grazing density in a timely manner, but grazing strategies are very difficult to implement due to the high variability of rainfall. In order to maintain plant diversity in the grassland ecosystems, we are trying to establish climate risk management for sustainable grazing.
