International Contribution to Prevention of Desertification

Arid Land Research Center (ALRC) works on international initiatives to address prevention of desertification and problems facing people of drylands.

• Contribution to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD)
  The Convention was adopted at the UNESCO headquarter in Paris, France in 1994 with attendance of 120 country representatives. The UNCCD addresses countries and regions facing drought and desertification to develop action plans to cope with these threats as well as developed countries to support such coping efforts. Tottori University systematically supports the Convention and participates in the biennial Conference of the Parties as a member of the Japanese delegation. In addition to participating in the 14th meeting of the UNCCD Conference of the Parties (India) held in September 2019, Tottori University co-hosted a side event entitled "Enhancing Resilience and Livelihoods through Community-based Actions" with the International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas (ICARDA) and presented initiatives of Tottori University.
• Co-hosting international conferences 
  We jointly host one of the largest international conferences on dryland science called the "International Conference on Development of Drylands" organized biennially by the International Dryland Development Commission (IDDC) with international partners. Several faculty members of ALRC are serving as IDDC board members.
• Partnership with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) 
  Personnel exchange with JICA and providing support in organizing JICA trainings.
