Researches

Research studies being conducted at the Laboratory of Plant Eco-physiology includes studying the eco-physiology of plants and crops and development and advancement of cultivation technologies in arid and semiarid areas. The eco-physiological studies basically focus on the responses of plants and crops to environmental stresses and the associated mechanisms. Besides, growth and distribution of plants in relation to specific soil conditions of the deserts and the desertified areas are also the study subjects of the laboratory. Further investigations include identification of specific plants with important ecological functions and/or having potentially economic value with an aim of appropriate agricultural utilization of such plants to obtain maximum production and the economic benefits.
The on-going projects are as follows:

1. Study on the root characteristics in relation to salinity and drought tolerance.

2. Relationship between the chemical and physical properties of root cell wall and salt tolerance in plants.

3. Study on the eco-physiology of halophytes with high economic value and development of cultivation techniques.

4. Investigation of vegetation distribution in the desertified areas of China.
