Necessity for This Research

  • Desertification is the land degradation caused by climatic changes and human activities in arid land which constitutes about half of the earth's surface
  • Desertification is a serious environmental issue, which affects the life of one sixth of the world population and a quarter of the land surface
  • Desertification in China is especially severe. The annual losses due to desertification are the same size as Shikoku in Japan. The environmental changes in China have great effects on the whole of Asia. Japan has suffered the sand wind which blows from inland China (sand dust and limiting sunshine)
  • For combating desertification, combined activities at the village, regional, country and continental levels are necessary
  • For combating desertification, social science is as equally important as natural science and a network approach is highly needed
  • Individual strategies for combating desertification are available, but a comprehensive strategy has not been developed
  • Japan and China joined the UN convention for combating desertification, and so it has an obligation for scientific and technological cooperation on combating desertification
