Application Guideline for Sponsorships, Assintantships, Traineeships and Fellowships for the fiscal year 2011
Global COE Program: Global Center of Excellence for Dryland Science

Aim
One of the aims of the Global COE Program is the capacity-building of young scientists who will participate actively in relevant international communities. To achieve this important aim, this program will offer financial assistance to young scientists in the forms of sponsorships, assistantships, traineeships and fellowships.
Types of financial assistance
  1. PhD Students
    >> Financial assistance will be available for:
    • Domestic Conference Presentation - 5 students (up to 100,000JPY per student)
    • International Conference Presentation - 5 students (up to 300,000JPY per student)
    • English Test (TOEIC, TOEFL, etc.) - 10 students (up to 20,000JPY per application)
    • Overseas Surveys (Short term) – 5 students (up to 500,000 JPY per student)
    • Overseas Surveys (Long term) - 1 student (up to 1,200,000JPY per student)
    • Overseas Surveys (Supervisor's visit) - 5 supervisors (up to 500,000 per supervisor)
    • Experimental Instruments - 10 students (up to 100,000JPY per student)
    • English Language Editing for Publication - 15 students (up to 100,000JPY per application)
    >>Total of 15 Research Assistantships (up to 110,000JPY/month for 6 months or 11 months)
    >>Overseas Traineeships (at DRI, Nevada, USA and ICARDA, Syria); the details will be announced elsewhere.

    N.B. The duration of 'Overseas Surveys (Short-term)' should be less than three months per travel, and the duration of 'Overseas Surveys (Long-term)' should be more than three months per travel. 'Overseas Surveys (Supervisor's visit)' are financial supports for supervisors (major, sub and assistant supervisors) to visit the sites where their students conduct survey under this program (with the support of 'Overseas Surveys (Short term and Long term)' for research guidance during the students' stay.
  2. Project Researchers
    Up to 8 Research Sponsorships (a maximum of 400,000JPY); the sponsorships will be used for research activities including overseas surveys and trainings.

  3. Postdoctoral Candidates
    2 Postdoctral Fellows to be appointed in October 2011 (salary: apporoximately 200,000JPY/month, duration: up to the end of this program(Marich 31,2012))
  4. Assistant Professors
    Up to 4 Research Sponsorships (a maximum of 500,000JPY); the sponsorships will be used for research activities including overseas surveys and trainings.

    N.B. The above-mentioned numbers and amounts are planned for the fiscal year 2011; they may be revised due to application circumstances.
Applicant eligibility, selection criteria and obligation
  1. PhD Students must:
    a. Be enrolled in the Global Arid Land Science (Division of International Studies on Dryland Agriculture, the Course of Bioenvironment Science), the United Graduate School of Agricultural Sciences or the Division of Health Administration and Promotion, the Graduate School of Medical Sciences as of April 1, 2011 or October 1, 2011 (students who are scheduled to be enrolled in at the appilication can apply);
    b. Be excellent students seeking future research positions in overseas institutions or professional positions in international organizations;
    c. Not have similar financial assistance from other sources;
    d. Spend research fund by the end of the fiscal year 2011.

    For your application,
    • Submit a research plan (in English, more than 5 pages of A4 paper) for your PhD study if you are in the first or the second-year grade and submit a research progress report on your PhD study (in English, more than 5 pages of A4 paper) if you are in the third-garde or more. In addition, the second-year students may include research outcomes.
    Submit your English test score (TOEIC, TOEFL, etc., one that you took within the past two years as of application in principal). Also, take the English test and submit your score after you have support under this program. This requirement is not applicable to those who will apply to 'English test.'
    • Submit a copy of acceptance if you have not been enrolled in the course at the application.

    N.B. Other information
    • The Research Assistantships are NOT available for foreign students on the Japanese government scholarships, or Japanese students, qualified researchers from private and public organizations, who are enrolled in the Graduate Schools.
    • The Financial Assistance for Domestic/International Conference Presentation is subject to the applicant presenting a paper at a conference as the first author. A report of the presentation should be submitted after the conference.
    • The Financial Assistance for Overseas Surveys is subject to submitting a survey plan (in English, more than 2 pages of A4 paper). A report of the survey (in English, more than 2 pages of A4 paper) should be submitted upon return.
    • The supervisors who make a trip under the 'Overseas Surveys (Supervisor's visit)' should submit a report of research guidance (About 1 page of A4 paper) upon return.
    • The Financial Assistance for English Language Editing for Publication is subject to the first author.

  2. Project Researchers must:
    a. Be employed under the Global COE Program "Global Center of Excellence for Dryland Science (Those who are scheduled to be employed at the application can apply);"
    b. Be excellent researchers seeking future research positions in overseas institutions or professional positions in international organizations;
    c. Not have similar financial assistance from other sources:
    d. Spend research fund by the end of the fiscal year 2011.
    e. Submit a report of the research activities.


  3. Postdoctoral Candidates must:
    a. Have obtained a PhD from the Division of International Studies on Dryland Agriculture, the Course of Bioenvironment Science, the United Graduate School of Agricultural Sciences or from the Division of Health Administration and Promotion, the Graduate School of Medical Sciences and has not passed five years after the acquisition (excluding the person who employed in the past under this program) or;
    b. Obtain PhD from the Division of International Studies on Dryland Agriculture, the Course of Bioenvironment Science, the United Graduate School of Agricultural Sciences or from the Division of Health Administration and Promotion, the Graduate School of Medical Sciences in or September 2011.

  4. Assistant Professors must:
    a. Be attached to the Arid Land Research Center, Faculty of Agriculture or Faculty of Medicine;
    b. Be outstanding researchers who will contribute towards establishing the Global Center of Excellence for Dryland Sciences;
    c. Not have similar financial assistance from other sources;
    d. Carry out the necessary research activities for the Global COE Program;
    e. Spend the research fund by the end of the fiscal year 2011;
    f. Submit a report of the research activities.

Selection process
PhD Students and Postdoctoral Candidates will be screened at the Selection Committee. Recipients of the Research Sponsorships for Project Researchers and Assistant Professors will be selected based on the selection criteria.
