Open Seminar for Global COE Program "Global Center of Excellence in Dryland Sciences"

December 7, 2010 (Tuesday)

Place: Meeting room, Faculty of Agriculture, Tottori University (Building No.2, 2F)
Invited Lecturer: Dr. Miloudi Nachit (International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas)

10:00-11:30
"Breeding durum for enhanced durum productivity, yield stability and improved grain quality"
In this talk, durum wheat (Triticum turgidum L. var. durum) breeding program, involved in the increase of the production and improved grain quality by using genetic and molecular genetic techniques will be discussed. The ICARDA durum breeding program results show clearly that the new cultivars can increase further productivity and yield stability in the fields in dryland and irrigated areas.

13:30-15:00
"Breeding durum for climate changes in the Mediterranean region"
Climate change in expected to have as significant impact on increasing the heat and drought stresses and the variability of the rainfall pattern in the Mediterranean basin. Breeding methodology and some preliminary results on traits and molecular markers to cope with climate change stresses such as drought, heat, and climate variation will be presented and discussed.
