Tottori University is known for its unique dryland studies
at the world-class Arid Land Research Center (ALRC). Although
there are no deserts and no drylands in Japan, the university
attracts many students to its dryland studies.
Tottori University has already established an internationally
renowned research base, i.e. the Tottori Center of Excellence
(COE) in dryland science. The Tottori COE was supported by the
21st Century COE Program (the predecessor program of the Global
COE Program) for five years ending March 2007.
However, to make this base a true COE, additional funding will
be required that will allow us to expand and strengthen our
international network, provide the resources to support new
students, and tackle challenging research problems. For further
development of the COE in dryland science, Tottori University
will establish ‘the Global COE for Dryland Science’ in collaboration
with the Desert Research Institute (DRI), Nevada, USA, and the
International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas
(ICARDA), Aleppo, Syria. |
